Astigmatism Correcting Lenses - Sunday, June 03, 2007 - Sunday, June 03, 2007
Nearly 20% of cataract patients also have astigmatism. Astigmatism - left untreated- leaves patients more dependent on glasses or contacts for their best vision. During cataract surgery, an implant lens is used to replace the cloudy natural lens--the cataract. Astigmatism correcting lens implants are nothing new. In fact, Dr. Mahootchi has been implanted nearly a 1000 of them over the last 8 years.
There are other techniques for correcting astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery--corneal incisional techniques like AK or LRI's. Although good in some cases, the results are more predictable with astigmatism (toric) implants. At our clinic, they are cheaper as well.
Correcting astigmatism has not been popular with all ophthalmologists. It is more work and you definitely sell fewer glasses afterward. But patients love it. Imagine having not only your cataract treated--but in the end having less of an astigmatism prescription than you've had all your life. When implanted at the time of cataract surgery, the costs are much cheaper for the patient.
Astigmatism correcting lens implants are in the news again. Medicare has approved a more expensive astigmatism lens, so many doctors are starting to become interested in promoting them.
Experience with these lenses really counts here. Not only with results but also with cost. Insurances for the most part don't care if you need glasses to see your best after surgery.

Good News for Medicare Patients - Sunday, February 25, 2007
Medicare patients with cataracts have a new option when considering surgery. When a cataract causes the vision blur to point that it interferes with ordinary everyday activities then surgery can improve the vision. Previously, Medicare patients could not upgrade to Crystalens to replace their cloudy lens. Although, Medicare does not pay for Crystalens, it is no longer forbidden to upgrade to Crystalens when Medicare pays for the normal expenses of cataract surgery. Learn more about cataracts and Crystalens certified surgeon Ahad Mahootchi, MD on this website.
