Treating Glaucoma with the Xen Stent: Alice’s Story

Alice’s story is an inspiration to anybody struggling with glaucoma. After losing her first eye to glaucoma, Alice underwent three separate surgeries in her surviving eye and used four medications to keep pressure down. Despite all of this, her pressure was still too high and Alice turned to Dr. Ahad Mahootchi at The Eye Clinic of Florida for help. Dr. Mahootchi made Alice one of the first patients in Florida to receive the innovative Xen stent,  brand new surgical option for people with unresolved glaucoma.

The Xen stent consists of a soft, incredibly narrow stent derived from collagen and a preloaded injector. Using an incision in the cornea, the preloaded injector implants the tiny stent into the eye. Since the Xen relieves pressure by creating a new pathway for aqueous flow to a safer space within the eye, it doesn’t take long for abnormally high pressure to diminish and minimize the risk of vision loss and blindness.

Two months after surgery, Alice no longer relies on any medication at all, and her pressure remains at a safe, healthy level! The Xen stent is a truly life changing surgery that has the potential to help all glaucoma patients.
