Your Insurance Covers the Surgery. You Choose the Lens.
If you've been told you need cataract surgery, your insurance will cover the procedure. What it won't cover is the quality of the lens that goes in. A premium lens can give you clear vision at near, intermediate, and distance — often without glasses at all. Serving Tampa, Wesley Chapel, and Lakeland at 30–50% less than competitors.
The Decision Most Patients Miss
Your Lens Choice Is Permanent. Choose It Wisely.
Your eye's natural lens is removed during cataract surgery, so whatever lens goes in is the lens you will have for the rest of your life. Most patients are never told this clearly enough — or never told they had options at all.
You may benefit from a premium lens upgrade if you…
- ✓Have been diagnosed with cataracts and are approaching surgery
- ✓Currently wear reading glasses, bifocals, or progressives
- ✓Notice blurred vision, halos around lights, or difficulty driving at night
- ✓Want to reduce or eliminate glasses after your cataract surgery
- ✓Have astigmatism and want it corrected at the same time
- ✓Are active (golf, tennis, pickleball, boating, travel) and want clear vision at every distance
- ✓Want to make the most of a surgery your insurance is already paying for
Why a Premium Lens Upgrade Is Worth Considering
A basic monofocal lens (the kind insurance covers at no extra cost) restores distance vision. You will likely still need reading glasses — and possibly glasses for intermediate distances too.
A premium trifocal, EDOF, or toric lens is engineered to correct vision across multiple distances simultaneously. Many patients see clearly at near, intermediate, and distance without any glasses after surgery.
What the Upgrade Costs
Transparent Pricing. No Surprises.
Your insurance covers the cataract surgery itself. The premium lens upgrade is a separate, all-inclusive out-of-pocket cost.

Flexible financing available. Dr. Mahootchi will review your specific insurance coverage and give you a clear, honest picture of your total out-of-pocket cost before you commit to anything. Already compared prices elsewhere? Our upgrade pricing runs 30–50% below most Tampa Bay competitors.

What Patients Say
Real Results. Real People. Real Tampa Bay.
I had PanOptix Pro lenses implanted and I cannot believe how sharp everything looks. I'm 62 years old and I have not needed reading glasses or distance glasses since surgery. Dr. Mahootchi and his team treated me like family from the very first call. And the price was almost half of what another clinic quoted me.
As a retired attorney from South Tampa, I did months of research before choosing Dr. Mahootchi for my cataract surgery. After my Aspire Toric upgrade I can read a menu, see a face across a restaurant, and drive at night — all without glasses.
I was terrified of eye surgery. The staff walked me through every step. Next morning I could see my alarm clock, read my phone, and see our lakehouse across the water — all without glasses.
My doctor told me I needed cataract surgery. Dr. Mahootchi took the time to explain all my lens options clearly. Now at 68 I have 20/20 vision and read without glasses for the first time in years.
I chose the trifocal upgrade with my cataract surgery and it changed my life. I'm 61, I sail competitively out of Tampa Bay, and I can now read charts, see the horizon, and read my instruments without a single pair of glasses on the boat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything You Need to Know Before You Decide
No. Insurance and Medicare cover the cataract surgery itself — meaning the procedure to remove your clouded natural lens. The premium lens upgrade is an elective add-on that you pay out of pocket, in addition to any applicable deductible or co-pay. The upgrade cost is $2,250 per eye for trifocal and EDOF lenses, and $1,100 per eye for the Aspire Toric. Our billing team will walk you through exactly what your insurance covers before you make any decisions.
A standard monofocal lens corrects vision at one distance, typically distance. Most patients who receive only a basic lens still need reading glasses and often glasses for intermediate tasks like computer work. It restores functional vision. It does not give you the kind of all-distance clarity that a trifocal or EDOF lens can provide.
Before surgery. Once your cataract procedure is complete, the lens choice is permanent and cannot be changed without a second procedure. If you are approaching cataract surgery, the time to ask about premium lens options is at your pre-operative appointment — or ideally, at a dedicated consultation before that.
For most patients who want to reduce their dependence on glasses, yes. You are already having the surgery. The natural lens is already coming out. The only variable is what goes back in. A one-time upgrade cost for a lifetime of clearer vision at every distance is a very different calculation than paying for it on top of elective surgery.
We offer the full portfolio of FDA-approved premium IOLs, including the enVista Envy, PanOptix Pro, TECNIS Odyssey, FineVision HP, Aspire, Aspire Toric, PureSee, and Vivity. Dr. Mahootchi will review your measurements and recommend the lens that best fits your vision goals, eye health, and lifestyle — not a one-size-fits-all default.
We recommend it, especially if you have not yet had a full pre-operative evaluation at our practice. A dedicated consultation allows Dr. Mahootchi to take precise measurements, review your eye health, and make a personalized lens recommendation. There is no pressure and no obligation.
Several premium lenses include a toric version that corrects astigmatism at the same time as your cataract surgery — no separate laser procedure needed. The Aspire Toric in particular offers the widest range of astigmatism correction of any toric premium lens available. Dr. Mahootchi will assess your astigmatism during your consultation and let you know which options apply to your eyes.
Our IOL upgrade pricing is 30–50% below most Tampa Bay competitors. Trifocal and EDOF upgrades start at $2,250 per eye. Aspire Toric upgrades start at $1,100 per eye. Flexible financing is available. These are all-inclusive prices with no hidden fees.
