Leading-Edge Cataracts Treatment: Dropless & IV Free Options
Clouding of the eye’s natural lens is called a cataract. Everyone will get a cataract at some point in their lifetime. Age is the most common cause, but smoking, family genetics, steroid medications, and trauma can give even younger patients a cataract that interferes with their lifestyle. The cataract isn’t a growth: it is usually a gradual process in which the lens becomes less clear and harder to see through, like stained glass.
Cataract surgery is a “want-to,” not a “have-to,” surgery initially. If you choose surgery, your natural lens (the cataract) is removed, and a lens replacement option will need to be made.
Cataract surgery isn’t just a treatment for cataracts – it offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get rid of glasses for distance, near, and everything in-between. During cataract surgery, we painlessly remove the cloudy natural lens and replace it with a new man-made lens implant that incorporates your glasses prescription. That way, our eye surgeon can choose to not only replace the cloudy lens but also reduce the glasses prescription afterward. About 98% of our patients have negligible prescriptions after cataract surgery with us. This patient had astigmatism and used glasses to see in the distance before her surgery:
At The Eye Clinic of Florida, we offer a range of advanced options for cataract surgery to help you achieve clear vision and freedom from glasses. Tailored to meet individual needs, our treatments are supported by years of expertise and cutting-edge technology.
Here’s a detailed look at the premium lens implant options we proudly offer, ensuring a solution for every lifestyle:
Known as the #1 choice for cataract patients seeking a full range of clear vision, PanOptix lenses are multifocal IOLs designed to provide exceptional clarity for near, intermediate, and distance tasks. Whether you love reading, working on a computer, or enjoying outdoor activities, PanOptix can significantly reduce your dependence on glasses. These lenses are particularly well-suited for those who want seamless vision at every distance, making it easier to live an active, glasses-free life.
The Envy lens implant is crafted to meet modern visual demands, offering consistent vision with precision and sharpness. Ideal for individuals juggling both professional and recreational activities, this lens accommodates your need for clarity during work, driving, and reading. With Envy, you are empowered to maintain a fast-paced lifestyle without the hindrance of glasses.
Odyssey lenses are a fantastic option for patients seeking enhanced visual adaptability. These implants are designed to offer clarity in various conditions, including low-light environments. If you want steady, dependable vision for everyday life, Odyssey could be your perfect match. They provide great flexibility and focus, reducing visual discomfort in challenging lighting scenarios.
Crystalens stands out as one of the most advanced lens implants, specifically designed to address presbyopia. By uniquely mimicking the eye’s natural focusing ability, this accommodating IOL enables smooth transitions between distances—whether you’re reading a book, using a phone, or admiring a scenic view. Patients who choose Crystalens often marvel at their newfound ability to see both near and far without needing glasses.
Trulign lenses are a variation of Crystalens, but they also correct astigmatism. Perfect for patients with corneal irregularities, the Trulign IOL improves clarity across all distances while simultaneously addressing distortions caused by astigmatism. This dual functionality makes Trulign a versatile choice if you want to combine vision correction with cataract removal for a comprehensive solution.
Patients who take Flomax (used to manage urinary issues) sometimes face unique challenges during cataract surgery due to the way the medication impacts the iris. At The Eye Clinic of Florida, we utilize specialized techniques to ensure safe and effective surgeries for these patients. Paired with tailored lens implant options, our approach ensures excellent surgical outcomes and improved quality of vision, regardless of medical history.
As innovators in the field of ophthalmology, the Eye Clinic of Florida has pioneered the use of dropless and IV-free cataract surgery. This revolutionary technique eliminates the need for patients to use multiple eye drops before and after surgery, making the whole process easier and more convenient.
Say goodbye to the hassle of multiple prescriptions! Our Dropless Cataract Surgery, perfected over 11 years, eliminates the need for hundreds of eye drops after surgery. This innovative approach is 100 times more effective at preventing infections while saving you time and money.
Our IV-Free Cataract Surgery offers a stress-free and comfortable experience without the need for IV sedation or breathing tubes. Patients stay calm and relaxed with tailored anesthesia options, often describing the procedure as the “best happy hour” experience.

What to Expect During Cataract Surgery
- No pre-operative exam with a cardiologist or internist needed for routine cases – no EKG, chest X-ray, or bloodwork. Save $200 or more with us.
- Only one drop, once a day, for 3 days before and 7 days after surgery for most patients – 100x more effective at preventing infection than standard drops, and $300 less expensive.
- The average patient spends less than 90 minutes at our center; the surgery itself takes only a few minutes.
- IV-Free options available – no breathing tubes used. Most patients describe simply "not caring" or feeling like they're at the best happy hour ever.
- The cloudy, natural cataract lens is liquefied with ultrasound and removed through a small opening; the capsule is left in place to hold your new lens implant.
- You should not drive the day of surgery – your eye will likely be dilated for a few hours. Same-day post-op appointments are available, and a hotel is two doors down for traveling patients.
- Most patients can see soon after surgery and drive again the next day.

Everything You Need to Know Before You Decide
The most common signs of cataracts include blurry or cloudy vision, difficulty seeing at night, sensitivity to light and glare, seeing halos around lights, faded or yellowed colors, and the need for frequent prescription changes in glasses or contact lenses.
Some common cataract symptoms include blurry or cloudy vision, difficulty seeing at night, sensitivity to light, seeing halos around lights, fading or yellowing of colors, and needing frequent changes in prescription glasses or contact lenses.
The answer for an overwhelming majority of people is no.
Anxiety before the unexpected is common and natural. Visiting our surgery center beforehand can help.
We use 2 oral medicines (no IV) on over 95% of our patients to relax. This relaxes you (you don’t care is a good way to put it) without completely knocking you out or requiring life support. Interestingly, most do not remember the procedure itself.
The same type of numbing eye drops used in the clinic are used at the surgery center. However these drops numb for longer.
Many of our online reviews make the point that whatever the anxiety level is before surgery, the patients find the process a breeze that they should not have worried over.
We know everyone is different and we can adapt to almost any anesthetic need.
Dropless cataract surgery eliminates the need for multiple post-operative eye drops, saving patients both time and money. It without a doubt means less dry eye after surgery. Our innovative approach, perfected over 12 years, is 100 times more effective at preventing infection compared to traditional drop-based methods. This means a safer surgery, less cost, less hassle and a smoother recovery for you.
Multifocal lens implant options are increasing and improving. The Eye Clinic of Florida has over 20 year’s experience with these type lens implants. The good news is that we don’t restrict options. We use each of the main 3 options of 2025. That’s not the case everywhere as some surgery center’s restrict options.
In general, all 3 have improved distance, intermediate and near vision over lens implants of the past. Additionally, night time side effects are much less common and more mild.
Envy has a better range of astigmatism correction than the others. It’s also very easy to replace if needed. The chance of that is less than 1 in 300. Panoptix and Panoptix Pro tend to make shorter patient’s happier.
Odyssey seems to have very few nighttime side effects, but may not be the best choice for very small pupils.
Dr. Mahootchi will review the options with you during your cataract or clear replacement consultation and together we can choose what’s best for you. You have options!
We are amazed at how many doctors do the second eye’s surgery before even studying what happens with the first eye. That’s a mistake.
Modern presbyopia correcting lens implants like Envy, Odyssey and Panoptix Pro are great but require that you have almost no prescription afterwards to work properly. Our formula to calculate what lens implant we put in is amazing but not perfect.
With multifocal lens implants you want to make sure the patient loves the results (day and night) and has no bothersome issues. It honestly takes more than 2 weeks for patients to truly evaluate the lens implants function. About 1 in 10 to 1 in 20 will say they love the near vision but want to try something else in the other eye due to night vision issues.
Doing the more forgiving non-dominant eye first is a must in our opinion. It’s the more forgiving eye. The need for lens enhancement is 1/5 as common if you do the non-dominant eye first. If there is anything to improve or learn from the dominant eye ( which may not notice a small prescription), then it allows for smarter choices for the second less forgiving eye.

Most patients can resume daily activities, including driving, as soon as the next day. While full recovery varies from person to person, the majority experience significant vision improvement within 24 hours, with minimal restrictions during the healing process.
