Notice changes in your eyesight? Schedule an appointment today for the clarity you deserve. Let’s explore five key cataract eye symptoms you should not overlook.
1. Blurry or Cloudy Vision
Vision may feel foggy, making it harder to read, recognize faces, or see details. This occurs when proteins in the eye’s lens clump together. Over time, the lens becomes less transparent, scattering light and reducing clarity. The blurriness can worsen gradually, making daily tasks increasingly difficult.
2. Light Sensitivity
Bright sunlight or indoor lights may feel overwhelming, while dim settings become harder to navigate due to reduced light entering the eye. Cataracts can cause glare and discomfort, especially in bright environments. Wearing sunglasses or hats with brims can help manage sensitivity. This symptom is often an early sign of developing cataracts.
3. Night Vision Problems
Halos and glare around headlights and streetlights make night driving unsafe, a common challenge as cataracts develop. These issues arise because the lens scatters incoming light unevenly. Reduced color contrast at night can make it harder to distinguish objects in low-light settings. Many people find night driving particularly stressful as cataracts progress.
4. Frequent Prescription Changes
If you’re constantly updating your glasses or contacts, cataracts could be altering your lens focus, making vision less stable. This occurs as the lens gradually hardens and its shape changes. Often, the new prescriptions provide only temporary improvement. Persistent changes in vision may indicate the need for cataract evaluation.
5. Faded Colors
Colors may look dull or yellowed over time due to protein buildup in the lens, which many patients only notice after surgery. This happens because cataracts filter out blue light, altering how colors appear. Whites may seem yellow, and bright colors can lose their vibrancy. Post-surgery, many patients are surprised by how vivid colors look again.

FAQ
What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, which is located behind the iris and the pupil. It occurs when proteins in the lens clump together, preventing light from passing through clearly.
Does cataract surgery hurt?
We keep you comfortable and your mind at ease for your surgery. For the vast majority of patients, we can do this without an IV. However, we have many options for every type of patient.
How is cataract surgery performed?
Cataract surgery is a highly successful and the most common surgical procedure. Dr. Mahootchi has a laser-free technique that makes a tiny incision to access the lens. The clouded natural lens is then gently liquified and removed. It is then replaced with a new, artificial intraocular lens implant (IOL). Most patients choose to incorporate their glasses prescription into the new implant so they are less dependent on glasses.
What are the benefits of dropless cataract surgery?
Dropless cataract surgery eliminates the need for patients to use multiple types of prescription eye drops before and after the procedure. Most places in the US use 3 different types of eye drops for a week, totaling 200 or more doses. We don’t. We place the antibiotic in the eye and the anti-inflammatory around the eye at the time of surgery. Study after study shows this reduces the risk of infection from 1 in 1500 to less than 1 in 15,000 or even 1 in 150,000!
Using less drops this way drastically reduced dry eye after surgery and saves $100’s of dollars.
How do I find a qualified eye surgeon near me?
Dr. Mahootchi is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and has hundreds of great reviews. We don’t pay referral fees and work only for you. We own our surgery center so options are not limited as they are elsewhere.
