Almost everyone aged 65-74 will experience some degree of vision issues caused by cataracts. Most often, a cataract is simply the natural lens of the eye becoming less clear. Cataracts can cause symptoms like blurry vision in low light or bright light, difficulty seeing or driving at night, and dull color perception.  Fortunately, cataract surgery is a highly effective treatment, offering improved vision and quality of life for millions each year. It’s the most common surgery in the US.

There are many good surgeons. but fewer great surgeons.  Some surgeons offer a better results, better experience, or better value.

To ensure you’re fully prepared for your cataract surgery, here are seven essential questions to ask your surgeon.

Picking who to call is not an easy task.

  • You need to be aware that financial relationships or incentives color referral. It’s human nature. Consider opinions from multiple sources.
  • Check online reviews from multiple sources. It’s quite telling if the surgeon has 10 years or more experience in the area, but only a few reviews. Some will even change their name slightly to create new listing as a “do-over”.
  • Some listing sites are paid sites. A surgeon has to pay for the listing. Healthgrades.com presents doctors from very far away in your search first.. That’s because of paid premium placement. We have great healthgrades.com(opens in a new tab) ratings but you often have to dig to find us under doctors 50 miles away who don’t even do eye surgery.

The Eye Clinic of Florida has close to 1,000 great reviews from Google, WebMD, Yelp, Facebook from over a decade or two.

To ensure you’re fully prepared for your cataract surgery, here are seven essential questions to ask your surgeon.

1. How Do I Choose the Right Cataract Surgeon?

Questions to Ask About Patient Outcomes and Satisfaction

  • What is your overall success rate for cataract surgeries?

Understanding the surgeon's track record can provide confidence in their ability to deliver effective results.

  • What percentage of your patients like me achieve 20/20 vision or better after surgery?

This question helps gauge the likelihood of achieving your desired vision outcome.

  • How do you handle complications if they arise during or after surgery?

Knowing the process for addressing potential issues ensures you feel supported throughout your recovery.

  • Do you track patient satisfaction following surgeries?

A surgeon who values patient feedback is more likely to prioritize excellent care and results.

  • Can I speak with previous patients or see testimonials?

Hearing directly from others about their experiences can help you assess the surgeon’s qualifications and outcomes.

Choose a board-certified, experienced cataract surgeon with a strong track record. Check credentials, reviews, and success rates to ensure the best care for your vision.

2. What Are My Lens Options and Which One Is Right for Me?

When considering cataract surgery, understanding the types of lenses is essential. Options include monofocal lenses for single-distance vision, multifocal lenses for multiple distances, and toric lenses for astigmatism. These can greatly reduce your need for glasses. An eye exam will help determine the best lens for your needs and lifestyle. Discuss your options with your surgeon to make an informed choice.

Laser for cataract surgery is a gimmick in our opinion. Lens implants have astigmatism correction available already. Why pay more for laser?

We also feel that the light adjustable lens implants have results that are not worth the cost ($4,000 and up). Other implants have better results for far less money and hassle.

3. What Are the Risks and Success Rates of Cataract Surgery?

When preparing for cataract surgery, consider these important points:

  • Common risks and side effects:
    • Likelihood and severity of complications. Ask about dry eye, infection, retinal detachment, and prolonged recovery. Our DroplessTM cataract surgery has made dry eye afterward a non-issue. The same DroplessTM technique means your risk of infection is less than one in 15,000!
    • Management of side effects like dry eyes or blurry vision.
    • Who pays for adjustments to make the vision better?
  • Success rates:
    • Track record at The Eye Clinic of Florida.
    • Patient outcomes and overall success statistics.

Being informed will help you feel confident in your decision.

4. What Should I Expect During Recovery and Follow-Up Care?

We ask you to take it easy after your surgery for the rest of the day. Your eyes are dilated, and there can be some blur in the first few hours, but the colors are immediately more vivid. 99% of our patients can drive without glasses the next day. Most patients can resume light activities like watching TV or going for a walk the same day. Most can work or play golf the next day, but we suggest not getting your head underwater for a week and not lifting anything over 20 lbs for a few days. The vision gets better and better every day for a few days, with subtle improvement occurring over the next few weeks.

Follow-up appointments are key to monitoring healing and ensuring the best results.

5. What Will Cataract Surgery Cost Me and What Does Insurance Cover?

Understanding your insurance coverage for cataract surgery is key to planning. Check if your policy covers standard procedures and lenses or if premium lenses cost extra. Ask about out-of-pocket expenses and payment plans to ease financial concerns. Clear cost details help avoid surprises and give peace of mind as you proceed with treatment. Why pay twice for the same advanced technology?

Under Medicare, you have many options for cataract surgeons. Under Medicare Advantage, you may not. Some even limit you to one surgeon per county! That’s hardly a choice. Call our office at 813-779-3338 for help in selecting a plan that gives you options, not restrictions.

6. How Can I Make Sure My Treatment Plan Is Personalized?

A tailored treatment plan considers your unique vision needs and lifestyle goals, ensuring you receive the best possible outcomes. Going over what you do with your day and what you expect afterwards with the surgeon is essential—that’s something almost all our patients feel after spending time with the surgeon before the surgery! Dr. Mahootchi meets face-to-face with all his cataract surgery patients long before the surgery. We spend time with you. That’s not delegated to a counselor or assistant.

7. What Questions Should I Ask Before Moving Forward?

Here are key questions to ask before cataract surgery to feel confident and informed:

  • What lens options are available, and which is best for me?
  • What results can I expect after surgery?
  • How long is the recovery, and are there any restrictions?
  • What risks or complications should I know about?
  • How should I prepare for the surgery?

These questions will help you understand the procedure and make informed decisions about your care.
